Captain Ted's Fun Facts

  • Columbia Metropolitan Airport has two runways for airplanes to take off and land.  One of the runways measures 8,000-feet-long and the other is 8,600-feet-long!
  • Any size airplane can land at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, including the Boeing 747 and the military C5A.
  • The Airport is much like a small city with its own Police Department, Fire Station, and Post Office.
  • The pretty ponds on either side of the Airport terminal aren't just for looks!  The ponds hold about 200,000 gallons of water that can be used by the Airport Fire Department to put out fires.
  • Columbia Metropolitan Airport has two 200-foot-long moving sidewalks, the first in South Carolina.  No walking involved, just hop on and ride!
  • The Air Traffic Control Tower is 105-feet-tall.

  • An airline captain is easily recognized by the four stripes on his sleeve.  Look at Captain Ted's picture.  How many stripes do you see on his sleeve?
  • More than 1.1 million passengers travel through Columbia Metropolitan Airport each year.
  • It takes a lot of people for an airport to run smoothly.  More than 1400 people work at the Airport.
